GOD'S CALL
Dr. Travis announced his call to the ministry in 1988 and was licensed under the pastorate of Rev. H. M. Dailey at First Baptist Church Stamping Ground. He later served as an Associate Minister to Rev. H. M. Dailey, who was also Pastor of Zion Baptist Church in Georgetown, KY.
On March 27, 1994, Lic. John C. Travis accepted the call to be the under-shepherd at First Baptist Church Maddoxtown. He was ordained on April 16, 1994, at the Zion Baptist Church and installed at First Baptist Maddoxtown on April 24, 1994, as our 22nd pastor.
FAMILY
Dr. Travis was born, Sept 5, 1956, to Charles and Rosa Travis as the 12th of 14 children. He was raised in Carroll County Kentucky, spending most of his childhood in Ghent, KY. At the age of 5, he confessed his hope in Christ at 2nd Baptist Church Ghent, KY, and was baptized by the late Rev. John C. Sharpe.
Dr. Travis has been married to the former Billie Talbert since 1981. They have been blessed with two sons: Chris (Brittany) and Logan (Erin), four beautiful granddaughters: Madelyn, Isla, Margot, and Laila and two grandsons: Jameson and Jorren. In his spare time, when not studying to prepare for sermons, Bible Study or Sunday School lessons he loves to vacation with his family or watch sports, westerns and action movies at home.
SERVICE
During his time as Pastor, Rev. Travis has led the Church with much love and dedication to teaching and preaching, emphasizing studying the Word of God and strengthening our relationship with Him. As a result, growth has become evident in the lives of our members. Special focus has been directed toward educating our young people, spiritually as well as academically, and keeping our seniors involved to utilize the valuable knowledge and example from their lives. Rev. Travis has spearheaded many structural improvements to the Church, as well as restructured and redirected the church ministries. Most importantly, under the leadership of Rev. Travis, many have accepted Christ as their personal savior.
Dr. Travis spent 38 years as a teacher and Dean of Students for the Scott County Board of Education. He was a former Dean of the Consolidated District of Central Kentucky, a teacher of adults in the Howards Creek District, a member of the Board of Trustees - Georgetown College, member of the Board of The Marshall Center for Christian Ministry, and currently serves as the First Vice-Moderator of the KY. Missionary Baptist Association (KMBA).
EDUCATION
Dr. Travis obtained his primary and secondary education within the public schools of Carroll County, Kentucky. After graduating from Carroll County high school in 1974, he entered Eastern Kentucky University as a freshman. In the Spring of 1976, he transferred to Georgetown College, where he earned a full football scholarship, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Art Education in 1979. In the Fall of that year, Dr. Travis began his teaching career at Scott County Middle School, later moving to Scott County High School, with a few years at Scott County 9th grade school. He recently retired as Dean of Students after 30 years in the Scott County school system.
Dr. Travis received his Master’s degree in Secondary Education from Georgetown College in 1987. In February, 2010, he earned his Doctorate of Divinity degree from the Master’s International School of Divinity in Evansville, Indiana. Dr. Travis was later selected as a MASTER'S International School of Divinity Registry of Biblical Knowledge Specialist. In 2023, Dr. Travis received certificates of completion for studies of the Hebrew Bible and Jewish New Testament from Israel Bible Center - Ahaliav St 8, Ramat Gan, 5252261, Israel.
